The Bayelsa State Scholarship Board was established by an edict of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and signed into law by Chief Diepreye S.P. Alameyeseigha on May 21, 2003.
This is the Third Scholarship Board since then.
The present eight (8) member board was on June 12, 2012, His Excellency, Barr. Hon. Chief Henry Seriake Dickson inaugurated the new Bayelsa State Scholarship Board.

Bayelsa State was created on October 1, 1996 out of the old Rivers State. The name, Bayelsa, is an acronym of three former Local Government areas – Brass, Yenagoa and Sagbama – in the then Rivers State, which had earlier on comprised the entire area now constituting Bayelsa State.
